Atop Mount Avilla
When we got close to the top of the mountain, we circled around the side to the portion that faces the ocean. The yellow grass gave way to a lush rain forest. This picture was taken in one of the lighter parts. Our guide passed on the origins of the mountain's name. Centuries ago there was a terrible storm that lasted a year. Tidal waves destroyed many villages. When the natives of Caracas saw a tidal wave headed for their village, they prayed to the goddess Avilla. Avilla froze the tidal wave into a mountain and it bears her name today.
